Session Details:

The John Coltrane Reference book notes on which tracks Coltrane plays the tenor and on which he plays the soprano. Lord simply notes that Coltrane played both during this session, but does not provide any specificity. Coltrane plays tenor on "One Down, One Up," and both tenor and soprano on "Afro Blue."

This was a live performance at the Half Note in New York City, it was broadcast live by WABC-FM radio as part of the show "Portraits in Jazz," hosted by Alan Grant. The John Coltrane Reference book notes that the performance (and the live broadcast) took place from 11:15pm to midnight. The address of the Half Note is also provided: 289 Hudson St, Manhattan, New York. The performance was originally issued on the Impulse label.

The John Coltrane Reference book notes that at the very beginning of this radio broadcast, some theme music routine to the "Portraits in Jazz" show is played. It is an unidentified version of a recording of "Satin Doll" that is not Coltrane's.
