Session Details:

This session is very mysterious. We have ultimately found that this date--though issued on albums called "The Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra" in its title, it was not actually recorded at the festival itself that year. Bruyninckx lists a session identical to this one in every way as occuring sometime in September of this year--i.e., at the festival--and notes another session occurring the same day with Diz and a different orchestra. But it seems apparent that he was incorrect and that the second session did not occur with Gillespie at all.

Basically, this is how we determined this:

1) Neither Tom Lord nor Cuscuna/Ruppli book have any indication of either session, even though Bruyninckx lists it issued on a Blue Note 17466

2) While Fitzgerald & Lord list this session as recorded after the festival, for Pacific Jazz, they do show it re-released on CD by Blue Note with a tracking number that does contain the number "17466" in them. There is, indeed, an album with the tracks from this session, and from another (Bruyninckx' second one) but it's attributed to an October session as well.

3) The title of the alleged issue in Bruyninckx is identical to the album issue that is confirmed in existence that Fitgerald, Cuscuna/Ruppli & Lord all cite; the others just list it as a studio session in October.

In Conclusion, it appears that Bruyninckx made an error on his CD-Rom that was subsequently corrected by online sources that are more current. In Bruyninckx, you will find another session after this one. We have omitted it at JDISC, because it appears that Diz did not play on it. -JS
