Session Details:

This is apparently Bird's first real leader session. However, Sutherland maintains that there is some controversy here. Namely that Dizzy Gilespie plays piano "on some tracks", but does not specify which exactly except Gillespie played trumpet AND piano for Koko because Miles could not do the intro correctly. However, it is unclear if Miles plays on some of the incomplete takes of this? It would seem so, if that was the way Parker determined he could not handle the complicated parts.

Furthermore, Sutherland gives no mention as to other instances where Gilespie played piano instead of Thornton. Jazzdisco.org, however, lists actual distinct personnel changes. Finally, there are some false starts and 'mystery' takes that Sutherland includes but Burton and jazzdisco.org do not, for some reason.

Both "Warming Up a Riff" and "Koko" are listed with "Cherokee" in parentheses because they are both played over the chord changes for "Cherokee". For our purposes, this is a bit of a misnomer: one could argue that, if they are different melodies, they are different songs, regardless of whether the chords are the same. Still, in the name of accuracy, we will put (for the track) both Warming Up/Koko and Cherokee in the "song" section. -JS
