Session Details: 

Many of the takes/tracks have parenthetical "aka" subtitles. Usually this means that a track is a new melody played over the chords of a different song. What's strange is in a few situations either a) takes of the same song have different parenthetical titles and b) some takes/tracks have more than one parenthetical song title. Not really sure what that means: did Bird or the engineer on the job just keep calling these songs the same thing, but subsequent listenings revealed them to be different than they were originally labeled? Or are they medleys? We will denote them in our own way: the given title as the 'track' title, with the parentheticals listed under 'song'. N.B. Listening to the tracks here, plus tracks of the alleged "aka" songs by themselves, they all sound like the same tunes and chord progression. Which is helpful on the one hand, but on the other hand it raises the question: Why did Parker, (or the engineer or the label, or whoever) name the same song three or four different ways?  

Furthermore, why does Charlie's Wig (track 6) have an aka of "Bongo Bop", but then tracks 9 and 10 are entitled "Bongo Beep" with completely different "aka" parentheticals--different both from each other and from Charlie's Wig? Burton and jazzdisco list NO "aka" subtitles for Charlie's Wig, so we have left them off, esp since they appear (on sutherland's) to simply be mispellings of other tracks in the session (e.g. "Bongo Bop" vs "Bongo Beep" and "Drifting on a Reed" vs "Drifting on a Road". Furthmore, jazzdisco.org alone lists a 2nd "aka" for "Bongo Beep" entitled "Habanero Mambobop". We can find no other existence of a song with that title anywhere in Parker's repertoire, let alone in Sutherland or Burton's discographies. -JS

Also, the 'Stash' issue claims that the take numbers are different than reported here. Sutherland lists them one way, but in his comments states that 'Drifting..." may begin on take II, and the same with Charlie's Wig and Bongo Beep. However, he states that more research must be done before a conclusion can be made. Even jazzdisco.org has (or at least implies) a different take order, because the matrix numbers start with 'B' for "Drifting on a Reed". For our purposes, though, as you will see we have taken Sutherland's take numbers, with the complete matrix numbers of Jazzdisco.org. But, as Sutherland notes, more research must be performed. -JS

Tracks 10 & 11 are excerpts, as in earlier sessions, of only Charlie Parker's solo. (actually, #11 is just the solo, #10 includes the theme as well as the solo). Furthermore, while Sutherland & Burton list 4 takes of this song, jazzdisco.org lists 6. -JS
